The Democratic Union for Integration (DDI) has announced plans to organize a national protest this Saturday in Tetovë to oppose recent decisions regarding the alteration of several local place names. The party stated that the demonstration aims to demand the reinstatement of the former designations for the city’s squares and street thoroughfares. According to the DDI, the proposed changes to the names are seen as conflicting with established constitutional order and potentially undermining the principles outlined in the Ohrid Agreement.
The party leadership suggested that the modifications represent a departure from agreed-upon civic norms. In a statement released regarding the planned demonstration, the DDI called upon citizens who support the foundational values of the state to participate in the peaceful assembly. The group framed the scheduled protest as a moment for the citizenry to actively defend the core principles upon which the nation was built.
This marks the second time the DDI has publicly mobilized again against such changes. The core dispute revolves around the nomenclature of public spaces within Tetovë. DDI representatives maintain that the current renaming initiatives are detrimental to the historical and cultural integrity of the area, advocating instead for a return to the previous official names for the city’s infrastructure.
The planned protest remains the central focus of political discussion in the region this coming weekend.
