Eurocommissioner Kos: Make the constitutional changes, while the Electoral Code must be approved

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that significant progress toward EU membership is possible for another Western Balkan country by 2028. Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Christian Mikoski, Commissioner Kos emphasized that while North Macedonia is a candidate for accession, the approval of specific constitutional changes remains a critical prerequisite for advancing in the process. According to reports from Macedonia Gazeta, the Commissioner stressed that implementing reforms is central to the entire accession trajectory.

These necessary reforms, Kos noted, are designed to foster a more robust economy and improve the overall standard of living for all citizens of the country. Commissioner Kos acknowledged the positive developments observed, stating the EU’s readiness to welcome the nation once the required steps are taken. The emphasis on constitutional reform suggests that deeper institutional alignment with EU standards is viewed as non-negotiable for the next phase of integration.

The statements underscore the conditionality attached to EU membership candidacy. While economic development and progress are recognized, the formal endorsement of constitutional adjustments is positioned by Kos as the immediate hurdle that must be cleared for North Macedonia to move closer to fulfilling its EU membership goals.
