The former Iranian leader, Ali Khamenei

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was interred in his hometown of Mashhad, located in northeastern Iran, following several days of mourning and funeral rites held across Iran and Iraq. The concluding prayer service took place at the courtyard of the Imam Reza Temple in Mashhad, which was led by the late Ayatollah’s eldest son, Ayatollah Seyed Mostafa Khamenei. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei passed away on February 28th, the same day that the United States and Israel initiated hostilities against Iran.

Among those who died with the prominent religious figure were several members of his family, including the wife of the new leader, Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the late Ayatollah’s nephew, and his daughter and granddaughter. Following the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his son, Mojtaba, assumed the position of supreme leader. However, Mojtaba has not been seen in public since the event and did not participate in the funeral ceremonies.

The passing of the influential Ayatollah Khamenei concluded a period of national mourning for the Iranian leadership.
