Colonel Martin O’Donnell stated to Euronews that the alliance stands ready to defend Bulgaria should it come under attack.
He referenced previous instances of collective defense, noting that NATO has previously defended Turkish territory against ballistic missile attacks originating from Iran during earlier phases of the conflict. “We saw when Iran fired missiles toward Turkey—a NATO ally—which NATO defended in all those instances, and we will continue to defend against any threat that Iran or anyone else poses to this defensive alliance,” O’Donnell asserted. The reported plans indicate that the Bulgarian government aims to station the American aircraft at the Bezmer military facility, which is situated approximately 257 kilometers south of the capital, Sofia.
