UK shares Russian funds for Ukraine: 1.4 billion euros from frozen assets, aid for Kyiv

The European Union has announced plans to allocate 1.4 billion euros to support Ukraine, utilizing interest revenue generated from assets belonging to the Russian Central Bank. These funds are designated to assist Ukraine with the consequences of the ongoing conflict and bolster its efforts to resist aggression. The revenue stream originates from the profits accrued on substantial assets of the Russian state, which were frozen by the EU following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the utilization of these funds aims to provide material assistance to Ukraine while establishing a mechanism to ensure that Russia assumes financial accountability for the damages inflicted by the war. According to the European Commission, the total value of the frozen Russian assets has generated an estimated 8 billion euros to date. This allocation represents a direct financial mechanism intended to bolster Ukraine’s stability and recovery efforts.

The move underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukrainian sovereignty and maintaining international pressure on Moscow. The utilization of the interest derived from these frozen funds solidifies a tangible financial link between the economic actions taken against Russia and the immediate needs of Ukraine.
