Lithuanian authorities have reported the discovery of an underground tunnel near the village of Latežeris, suspected to have been constructed for the purpose of smuggling migrants across the national frontier. The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service confirmed the finding during routine checkpoint operations conducted within the Druskininkai municipality. Assistance from Polish border guards, who provided specialized equipment, was instrumental in the discovery.
The constructed passage was located beneath the established border fence. Reports indicate that the tunnel reaches a depth of approximately 1.5 meters and was reinforced using a combination of wooden planks and tree trunks. This underground passage extends for roughly four meters, originating from Belarusian territory and penetrating into Lithuanian soil.
While the entrance point on the Belarusian side was obscured with camouflage netting, authorities noted that the construction was not fully completed. This unfinished state currently prevents the passage from being utilized for the movement of people. The discovery highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal crossings along the Lithuanian border.
