The Ministry of Health in North Macedonia has reported the detection of seven new cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection this week. All reported instances are concentrated within the capital city of Skopje. Specifically, the affected areas include two cases originating from the municipalities of Kisella Vodë and Gazi Babë, alongside one case each reported from Ilinden, Butel, and Aerodrom.
All individuals diagnosed with WNV are currently hospitalized. The affected patients fall within an age bracket of 60 to 84 years old. At the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Febrile Conditions, the total number of hospitalized patients remains at sixteen.
Laboratory testing has confirmed the infection in fifteen of these individuals, while results are currently pending for one suspected case. Patient status reports indicate that three patients are in critical condition and are currently intubated. These critical cases involve older adults who have pre-existing co-morbidities.
The remaining patients admitted to the facility are reported to be in stable condition. The Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely as part of its public health surveillance efforts.
