A New Mexico court has mandated that Meta pay an additional $567 million due to alleged failures in warning the public about the risks its platforms pose to minors. Judge Bryan Biedscheid characterized the company’s operation as a “public concern,” comparing the potential damage inflicted by the platforms to pollution generated by an industrial facility. The ruling specifically cited concerns that Meta’s algorithms exposed underage users to harmful material and facilitated contact with dangerous individuals.
This newly imposed fine increases the total financial penalty levied against the company. Combined with a previously established fine of $375 million, the total amount ordered reaches $942 million. Beyond the substantial monetary penalty, the court also issued several operational mandates aimed at enhancing child safety.
Meta is now required to implement new protective measures across its services. These directives include specific restrictions on the interaction between adults and users under the age of 18, as well as limitations on the frequency and timing of notifications received during nighttime hours. The court’s decision establishes a new framework of accountability for technology platforms regarding the safety of their youngest users.
