Ylfete Fanaj nominated for a second term as cantonal minister in Lucerne

Ylfete Fanaj, a figure of note in Swiss politics, achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by becoming the first woman of Kosovar descent elected to a canton government in Switzerland. Her political affiliation remains with the Social Democratic Party, which has since nominated her again for the 2027 elections, suggesting a strong likelihood of her continued candidacy. In May 2023, Ylfete Fanaj, representing the Swiss Social Democratic Party (SP), was elected to the government of the Canton of Lucerne.

Following her election, the Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger noted her significance, characterizing her as “the antithesis of the club of the male establishment – a new and active member of the second generation of immigrants.”

Over the past four years, Fanaj, who originates from Prizren, has held the portfolio for security and justice within the Canton of Lucerne, serving in the capacity of Interior Minister. Demonstrating continued support within her party, 55 members of the Lucerne Social Democratic Party unanimously nominated Ylfete Fanaj for a mandate this week. These developments underscore the sustained political support for Ylfete Fanaj as she prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
