Robots could “collect” waste to build the cities of the future

Two Icelandic architects have proposed an innovative approach for the future of construction: utilizing volcanic lava as a primary building material. This concept was developed in response to the region’s geological volatility, highlighted by the repeated evacuations in Grindavík following nine recorded eruptions since October 2023. The idea originated from the observations of Arnhildur Palmadottir and her son, Arnar Skarpheoinsson, following the massive material output during the 2014–2015 Holuhraun eruption.

They characterize the lava as a substance akin to “molten concrete, but without cement.” Given the extreme temperatures involved, manual human labor is impractical for handling this material. To overcome these environmental challenges, the proposed construction methods rely heavily on advanced technology, specifically the deployment of specialized robots. These automated systems would be necessary to manage and process the lava flow, transforming a natural hazard into a structural resource.

The architects envision a sustainable building paradigm where the destructive power of geothermal activity is repurposed. By integrating robotic engineering with geological material science, they suggest a pathway for resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding intense natural forces. This development points toward a radical shift in civil engineering, transforming a byproduct of planetary activity into the foundational element for future human settlements near active volcanic zones.
