The Minister of Interior, Pançe Toshkovski, announced significant enhancements to traffic enforcement measures concerning motorcyclists. Previously, the “Safe City” monitoring system primarily recorded incidents related to motorcycles passing through red traffic lights. However, Toshkovski stated that the technology has been upgraded to allow for the automatic detection and subsequent sanctioning of motorcycles that exceed designated speed limits.
According to the Minister, this expansion of capabilities represents a proactive measure aimed at increasing overall transportation safety. He pointed to recent statistics, noting that four of the six victims in traffic accidents this month were motorcyclists, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement. The “Safe City” system is currently operational across several key areas, including Corridors 8 and 10, as well as the cities of Skopje, Kumanovo, and Tetovo.
Furthermore, Toshkovski provided an update on the system’s expansion timeline, confirming that implementation is expected to reach Veles, Kavadar, and Negotinë by mid-September. The enhanced monitoring system will now capture speed violations, moving beyond mere checks of passage through traffic signals. Minister Toshkovski emphasized that the integration of speed detection into the existing framework strengthens the ability of authorities to manage traffic flow and improve safety standards across the monitored corridors.
