Iran has maintained a near-total internet shutdown for over five weeks, severing access to the global network for most users since early August. As of today, connectivity with the outside world remains at just 1% of normal levels, according to internet monitoring group NetBlocks. The government’s action involves isolating the general public while authorities explore a system of selective access for approved websites.
This system operates through a tiered listing process. Several government-approved websites continue to function online. However, individuals attempting to connect to the internet via satellite services, such as Starlink, face the risk of imprisonment for up to two years.
