Agim Aliu, the Mayor of Ferizaj and the head of the Association of Municipalities, has publicly called for the immediate return of financial resources to local municipalities. During a recent protest organized by local governing bodies, Aliu asserted that these funds rightfully belong to the citizenry. He addressed concerns regarding what he characterized as a selective and discriminatory approach to municipal funding.
Speaking on behalf of the association, Aliu stated, “We must not allow the taking of resources from the municipalities that belong to the citizens. We demand an end to this selective and discriminatory approach regarding municipal finances.”
A central theme of Aliu’s address was clarifying the role and ownership of local governance structures. He emphasized that the municipalities are institutions that serve the general public, rather than entities controlled by their respective mayors.
“The municipalities do not belong to the mayors; they belong to their citizens,” Aliu asserted. He further cautioned that the focus of local governance should remain on the needs of the population, transcending daily political cycles or the mandates of any single ruling party. Aliu stressed that the primary requirement for the citizens is sustained development through local projects.
