Elon Musk continues to resist Ukraine’s use of Starlink for strikes deep within Russian territory, despite recent reports suggesting a change in his stance. According to three sources familiar with the matter, the SpaceX CEO has maintained his opposition regarding this use. This contradicts reports from the Financial Times on August 30, which indicated that Musk might be amenable to Ukraine using Starlink-equipped drones to target Russian sites, pending White House approval.
Ukraine has sought broader authorization for the system’s use to bolster its efforts against Russian missile systems. Ukrainian media reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky raised this topic on July 28 during a private meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
As of yet, Ukraine has not secured official approval for such an expanded use of the technology. One source indicated that Musk believes that permitting Ukraine to conduct operations inside Russian territory using Starlink would not contribute to ending the conflict. The ongoing debate centers on the operational parameters and geographic scope of the system’s deployment.
While Ukraine seeks to enhance its defensive and offensive capabilities against Russian military infrastructure, Musk’s reported reservations suggest continued limitations on how Ukraine can use the platform in conflict zones.
