Spanish prosecutors have reported a significant rise in incidents of sexual assault within the autonomous city of Ceuta, coinciding with a large-scale migration event at the end of October. According to data presented by Ceuta’s chief prosecutor, Silvia Rojas, a total of 23 cases of sexual assault have been registered since the influx began, including nine incidents involving minors. Speaking to the newspaper “El País,” the prosecutors indicated that the rate suggests nearly one case has been recorded on a daily basis.
Rojas highlighted the vulnerability of the migrant women present in the territory, attributing this heightened risk to their irregular legal status. The spike in reported crimes follows the passage of at least 72,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta on October 30th and 31st. While the majority of those individuals have since departed, an estimated 5,000 remain in the city.
This ongoing presence has generated considerable local tension and administrative challenges for the local government. The findings from the prosecutors underscore a correlation between the recent demographic shift and the increased reporting of sexual assaults. Authorities are currently managing the complex situation involving the remaining migrant population, while the legal system processes the elevated caseloads related to sexual misconduct within Ceuta.
