A psychologist for over 1,000 students, Pristina with their shortage in schools

The psychological support services at the “Ahmet Gashi” Gymnasium in Pristina are currently managing a substantial workload relative to the student body. The institution serves approximately 1,200 students, and the demand for professional mental health assistance has led to significant strain on available resources. The school is staffed by only one full-time psychologist, who is frequently approached by multiple students seeking counseling or psychological intervention.

Daily requests for help often range from four to six students, with the primary concerns cited being anxiety, emotional distress, and issues related to bullying. According to the school psychologist, Albina Gashi, the volume of incoming requests is making consistent, longitudinal care difficult to maintain. Gashi noted that the high demand prevents the ability to provide the regular, consistent follow-up sessions that were previously standard practice.

She specifically highlighted that managing the caseload, particularly among students in the 10th grade, has made weekly appointments increasingly challenging. The current situation indicates a significant disparity between the needs of the students and the capacity of the available mental health professional within the school setting in Pristina. The psychologist’s efforts are focused on managing an overwhelming influx of cases, which impacts the depth and continuity of care provided to the students.
