In 2024, approximately 1.2 million citizens gained EU citizenship, marking an impressive 11.6% rise (+122,700 individuals) compared to the previous year. Eurostat’s data reveals this significant increase, particularly when contrasted with figures from 2014. According to Eurostat’s analysis, the number of citizens granted citizenship experienced a substantial 54.5% growth at that time, resulting in 762,100 citizens receiving the status.
The majority of these new citizens originated from three specific countries: Germany, with 288,700 citizens (24.5% of the total EU), Spain, with 252,500 (21.4%), and Italy, with 217,400 (18.5%). The nationality of the recipients was predominantly outside the EU. A remarkable 88.0% of the citizens were from countries not belonging to the European Union.
The remaining 10.6% consisted of citizens from other member states within the EU. Syrians, Moroccans, and Albanians were the most frequently identified beneficiaries among these new citizens.
