Advanced AI threatens the global financial system, says supervisory body

Andrew Bailey, Chairman of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), has issued a warning regarding the substantial risks posed by advanced artificial intelligence models to the global financial system. In correspondence directed to the Finance Ministers and central bank governors of G20 nations, Bailey highlighted that the potential for these sophisticated AI models to facilitate cyberattacks represents the “most urgent concern” for the highly interconnected nature of modern finance. Bailey, who also serves as the Governor of the Bank of England, emphasized that the current lack of comprehensive protective measures surrounding this rapidly developing technology presents a significant systemic vulnerability.

The concerns center on how the integration of advanced AI into critical financial infrastructure could be exploited, potentially destabilizing international markets. The warning underscores that while AI offers considerable benefits to global commerce, its misuse or failure presents novel threats that existing regulatory frameworks may not adequately address. Experts are calling for immediate international cooperation to establish robust safeguards.

The stability of the global financial architecture, which relies increasingly on digital connectivity, depends on proactively mitigating these technological risks. Failure to implement stringent, coordinated protective measures could expose the entire international financial network to unprecedented levels of risk.
