A 76-year-old individual presenting with confirmed West Nile meningitis and positive serology for the West Nile virus was admitted to the Clinic for Infectious Diseases within the last 24 hours. This admission brings the total count of hospitalized patients to seven. Overall, the facility reports ten confirmed cases of West Nile fever.
Of these patients, three remain in critical condition within the Intensive Care Unit and are currently on mechanical ventilation. As of the latest reports, no improvement in the health status of any of the affected patients has been observed. All individuals currently hospitalized are residents of Skopje.
During an announcement today, Fadil Cana, the Director of the Clinic, provided updates on the ongoing situation. He specified that additional cerebrospinal fluid analyses are necessary to definitively confirm the neuroinvasive form of the disease for the seventh suspected case. Furthermore, Cana clarified that while testing is ongoing, he noted that PCR technology does not represent the definitive gold standard for diagnosing the condition.
The emergence of another case underscores the ongoing vigilance required regarding the West Nile virus. The continued monitoring of these patients highlights the severity of the illness, particularly its potential for neurological complications. Medical personnel are continuing to conduct rigorous testing to accurately diagnose the extent of the infection across the affected population.
