The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, held a meeting on Tuesday with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. During the discussion, the parties evaluated the advanced progress of Albania within the ongoing negotiation framework with the European Union. A key point of discussion was the successful conclusion of the 8th Intergovernmental Conference between the EU and Albania, which confirmed that Albania has fulfilled the intermediate criteria established for Chapter 1, “The Foundations.”
During the meeting, President Begaj conveyed Albania’s strong determination to adhere to the established agenda and objectives.
He emphasized the commitment of the nation to concluding the remaining negotiation chapters by the target year of 2027. The dialogue focused heavily on the structural reforms underway in Albania. Specific areas highlighted for necessary advancement include comprehensive reforms within the judiciary, strengthening the rule of law across the country, and enhancing efforts to combat corruption and organized crime.
Furthermore, the commitment to achieving full alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy was presented as a critical pillar of Albania’s integration strategy. The meeting underscored the continuous efforts by the Albanian government to meet the standards required for deeper integration with the European Union.
