Political analyst Dritëro Arifi asserted that United States support is the critical determinant for Kosovo’s potential membership in NATO. Speaking on the “Info Magazine” program on Klan Kosova, Arifi emphasized that achieving such membership is contingent upon the approval of Washington. He argued that even if Kosovo were to possess a military force with readiness and capabilities comparable to those of major European powers like France or Germany, this alone would not guarantee entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
Arifi stated, “Without the US saying ‘yes,’ even if we had an army, say, of France or Germany with readiness, we cannot become a NATO member.” According to the analyst, the process for NATO accession extends beyond mere military capacity; it fundamentally relies on a decision from key international players. Therefore, the role of the United States remains paramount. For Arifi, the decision-making aspect is as crucial as any military readiness metric.
He suggested that while building a capable defense force is necessary, it is insufficient without the requisite political endorsement. This perspective highlights that for Kosovo, securing the backing of the United States is viewed as the indispensable prerequisite for advancing its goal of NATO membership.
