Mercedes-Benz is preparing to phase out its high-performance V12 engines in Europe, with a new, more efficient engine set to take its place. Audi and Porsche are expected to adopt a similar strategy with their own signature engine systems. The new engine will initially be manufactured in Ingolstadt, Germany, marking the return of diesel engine production within Europe.

It is slated for introduction in the 2027 model year. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the engine’s debut in the A3 model. Additionally, Audi plans to utilize the engine in its compact A4 and A5 models, also scheduled for release in 2027.

Julia Winkler has indicated that the high-performance RS3 will also be equipped with this new engine. The shift represents a strategic move towards greater fuel efficiency and aligns with evolving European automotive regulations. The introduction of a new diesel engine production line in Ingolstadt signals a commitment to continued diesel technology within the Volkswagen Group’s portfolio.

This development is anticipated to impact the performance and driving characteristics of several key models across both Mercedes-Benz and Audi lineups.
