Beshlin: The doctrine of the vacuum is based on the limited sovereignty of neighboring states

Serbian historian Milivoj Beshlin has asserted that the foreign policy adopted by the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, follows a specific political doctrine. Beshlin described this policy as advocating for the “limited sovereignty of neighboring states,” drawing a parallel to the geopolitical principles associated with the former Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev. During a recent discussion on the PIKË podcast alongside publicist Veton Surroi, Beshlin argued that this perceived doctrine originates from a foundation of Serbian nationalism.

According to his analysis, it suggests that Vučić operates under the premise that he represents the custodianship of Serbian sovereignty wherever the ethnic Serbs reside within the broader region. This viewpoint, Beshlin explained, implies that the self-determination and decision-making processes of neighboring nations are not treated as fully autonomous. The underlying logic, he stated, suggests that Vučić assumes a role of influence over Serbian communities situated outside the recognized borders of Serbia.

Beshlin addressed criticisms suggesting that Vučić’s actions are arbitrary or lack ideological grounding. He firmly refuted these claims, maintaining that the President’s foreign policy adheres to a consistent, if controversial, guiding principle. The historian’s assessment provides a critical academic interpretation of the current geopolitical stance emanating from Belgrade.
