Russia has suspended maritime transport operations within the Sea of Azov following numerous strikes attributed to Ukrainian drone forces over the past week. According to statements from Ukrainian officials, the sustained attacks have significantly impacted commercial and energy infrastructure belonging to Russia. Robert Brovdi, head of Ukraine’s drone forces, reported that units conducted strikes targeting multiple assets during one night, including ten oil tankers, four ferries, and a major oil refinery located in the city of Syzran.
Brovdi also noted that substations within occupied Crimea have been subjected to repeated attacks. The escalating targeting has reportedly forced adjustments to Russia’s logistical capabilities. Brovdi stated that the international “shadow fleet,” which is utilized for transporting sanctioned oil products globally, is becoming increasingly constrained.
He specifically asserted that the fleet can no longer safely utilize the Kerch Strait, the waterway connecting the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. The reported pattern of drone strikes suggests a strategic effort to degrade maritime and industrial capacity within the region.
