On August 1st, a foreign inpatient was admitted to the hospital. Following evaluation at the Infectious Clinic, testing confirmed a diagnosis of malaria, which was linked to the patient’s recent travel history to regions known to be endemic for the disease.
In response to the confirmed malaria case, infectologist Gramoz Bunjaku issued several critical pieces of advice to the public via social media platforms. Dr. Bunjaku emphasized that preventative measures against malaria must begin well before arrival at a destination.
He advised citizens that consultation with an infectious disease specialist is the crucial first step, noting that preparation for travel does not commence at the airport. Furthermore, the specialist strongly cautioned travelers against departing for endemic areas without securing appropriate prophylactic medication. He stressed that malaria poses a significant risk, capable of developing into a severe and life-threatening medical emergency if prevention protocols are ignored.
