Drought is emerging as a major environmental challenge in Kosovo, with the impacts of climate change becoming increasingly evident in the White Drini River Valley. Diminished rainfall, elevated temperatures, and extended dry spells are placing significant strain on water resources, agricultural productivity, and local ecosystems. To address these mounting issues, a conference titled “Drini Day” was convened in Vërmicë, Prizren.
The event brought together representatives from the Green Renaissance organization, various institutions, the academic sector, and field experts to discuss the ramifications of drought and the necessary measures for safeguarding and sustainably managing water supplies. During the conference, Urim Xharavina, Executive Director of the Green Renaissance organization, emphasized the critical need for collaboration in tackling water resource challenges. He stressed that effective management requires concerted efforts across different sectors.
The discussions highlighted how the confluence of climate shifts and regional pressures necessitates immediate action. Experts focused on developing comprehensive strategies to ensure the longevity of the white water system, which is vital to the region’s ecological balance and human sustenance. The consensus reached was that sustainable water management demands integrated planning involving scientific research, governmental policy, and community participation to mitigate the escalating risks posed by drought.
