Contaminated water from “Komunaleci” pumps entered the main water supply; Prosecutor’s Office provides details on water contamination in Gostivar

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Gostivar has initiated investigative procedures targeting three individuals in connection with serious environmental crimes stemming from the contamination of the local drinking water supply. The investigation concerns alleged misconduct by personnel associated with the public enterprise “Komunalec” in Gostivar. The three suspected individuals held positions as the Director of the public enterprise “Komunalec”—Gostivar, the Technical Manager of the Technical Works Sector, and the Head of the Department of Water Supply, Sewage, and Construction Works.

According to the prosecutor’s office, these collaborators are accused of rendering the drinking water within the leakage room of the system supplying water to the Municipality of Gostivar and several nearby villages unusable. This contamination was allegedly achieved through the introduction of harmful substances into the water system. Furthermore, the investigation highlighted an incident that occurred on June 25.

On that date, the suspects allegedly directed enterprise employees to install three submersible pumps into a canal. This canal contained surface water that had been contaminated with harmful substances, posing a direct threat to the public water resources in the Gostivar area. The actions taken by these public employees suggest a breach of duty that impacted the quality and safety of the local water supply for the community.
