Experts Warn About Risks of Reusing Water Bottles
Many people consume water from bottles or glasses that have been sitting overnight, a habit often done without much thought. However, experts caution that there is a limit to how long water can safely remain in containers before it should not be consumed. The practice of reusing water bottles or glasses is common, with items frequently returned to use after several hours.
But how safe is this routine? According to food and microbiology experts, the answer isn’t straightforward. While water itself doesn’t “spoil” like food, the conditions in which it sits can significantly impact its safety.
The World Health Organization notes that factors such as temperature and the presence of microorganisms play a crucial role. Bacteria and other microbes can proliferate in water, even if it appears clear and clean. While small amounts of bacteria may not cause immediate illness, repeated consumption of water that has been sitting for extended periods could lead to potential health concerns.
Experts recommend discarding water bottles and glasses after 24 hours to minimize the risk of microbial growth.
