The President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, has signed a decree ratifying a crucial loan agreement between the Albanian government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This financing is designated for the significant expansion and modernization of the national railway network. The approved funding aims to achieve the full electrification of the vital Tirana–Durrës rail line, alongside the development of a new connecting segment linking this network to the Tiranë International Airport.
Official documentation confirms that the total loan amount provided by the EBRD totals 11.62 million euros. Of this sum, 11.5 million euros is specifically allocated for the electrification works, with an additional 120,000 euros designated for initial commissions. This major infrastructure undertaking is partially supported by European Union funding, with the remaining 50% of the project being co-financed through the EU’s Investment Framework grants.
The successful ratification of this agreement marks a key step in modernizing Albania’s transport infrastructure. The investment is pivotal for enhancing connectivity across the country, particularly strengthening the rail links around the capital area and improving access to major transport hubs, including the airport.
