EU fines Google 890 million euros

The European Union has imposed an 890 million euro fine on Google for alleged violations of European digital regulations. The European Commission determined that the company engaged in practices that disadvantaged competition by favoring its own search engine and the Google Play store. Commissioner for Digital Economy, Henna Virkkunen, detailed that Google restricted the visibility of rival businesses within Google Search results.

Furthermore, the investigation found that Google limited app developers’ ability to offer cheaper alternatives to consumers outside of the Google Play ecosystem. The European Commission issued a warning, indicating that Google could face additional financial penalties if it fails to comply with existing EU regulations. Commissioner for Competition, Teresa Ribera, emphasized that market success should be determined by product quality rather than by preferential treatment from the company controlling the core platform.

These actions underscore the European Union’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field across digital markets. The substantial fine aims to compel Google to adjust its operational practices to align with European competition laws, thereby protecting both consumer choice and market fairness across the continent.
