European Parliament strips immunity from Italian MEP under investigation for corruption

The European Parliament has voted to strip the parliamentary immunity of Italian MEP Fulvio Martusciello. The decision follows an investigation by Belgian prosecutors concerning allegations of corruption and illegal lobbying connected to the Chinese technology firm Huawei. During a secret ballot held on Tuesday, 344 MEPs voted in favor of removing his immunity, while 234 voted against, and 25 MEPs abstained, according to euronews.

Martusciello, who belongs to the European People’s Party (EPP) political group, is reportedly suspected of instigating a letter in 2021. This letter, which was signed by eight MEPs, urged the European Commission not to discontinue the use of foreign 5G equipment on the grounds of national security. The basis for the Belgian investigation emerged after raids conducted in March 2025 at Huawei offices.

The vote by the European Parliament marks a significant procedural action concerning the MEP’s involvement in the controversy surrounding 5G infrastructure and international technology partnerships. The removal of immunity is a key step in allowing the ongoing legal scrutiny to proceed against the individual.
