Even if the war with Iran stops tomorrow, over 30 million people risk falling into poverty, the UN warns.

UN Warns of Massive Poverty Surge Regardless of Iran Conflict Resolution

Geneva – Even in the event of an immediate cessation of hostilities between Iran and other involved parties, over 30 million people worldwide face a significant risk of falling back into poverty, according to a new United Nations report. The warning highlights the complex and far-reaching economic consequences of the ongoing conflict. The UN’s Development Programme, speaking through Alexander De Croo, stated that global GDP is currently experiencing a contraction of 0.5% to 0.8%.

This decline directly impacts vulnerable nations, pushing an estimated 32 million people back into poverty. A key factor contributing to this surge is the disruption of traditional financial flows to the Asia-Pacific region. Previously, approximately $100 billion in annual money transfers from families were directed to the area.

However, the UN reports that these transfers are increasingly disappearing, exacerbating economic instability. The report emphasizes that the potential for widespread poverty remains substantial, regardless of a swift resolution to the conflict. The situation underscores the urgent need for sustained international support and strategies to mitigate the economic fallout for millions of people.
