Every elderly citizen in Macedonia can become an organ donor, Parliament approved the legal changes

Parliament has approved amendments to the Law on the Taking and Transplantation of Human Body Parts for Healing purposes, fundamentally altering the process for organ donation. The legislative change empowers every adult citizen to formally document their personal wishes regarding the donation of their organs after death by submitting a declaration to their attending physician. The revised law stipulates a specific procedure for recording this consent.

The declaration must now be registered through a dedicated digital module within the established “My Appointment” system. A key element of the updated provision is that citizens retain the right to modify or withdraw their decision at any point in the future, ensuring the declaration accurately reflects their current wishes. The passage of these amendments, which passed with 58 votes in favor and 6 against, aims to enhance transparency and build greater confidence within the donation framework.

According to the rationale provided for the changes, the primary objectives are to ensure a clearer articulation of the personal will of every citizen, thereby fostering greater trust in the national organ donation system, and improving the overall flow of information concerning organ donation. This new mechanism centralizes the decision-making process, giving individuals direct control over their posthumous wishes. By integrating this consent into a mandatory digital record, the government intends to streamline coordination between medical professionals and the individual’s expressed desires, solidifying a clearer legal pathway for organ retrieval and transplantation.
