The FBI has repatriated 48 ancient Egyptian artifacts to Egypt following an investigation conducted by its Art Crime Team. The returned collection comprises various items, including figurines, amulets, and burial equipment, spanning the Pharaonic, Roman, and Coptic periods. FBI Deputy Director Patrick Grandy emphasized the historical value of the recovered items, stating that “These objects represent Egypt’s rich history.
Most of them are thousands of years old, and their cultural significance to the Egyptian people is immeasurable.”
Allen Grove, a special agent with the team, reported that the investigation into the trafficking of these artifacts is ongoing. Grove noted that while the suspected trafficker is deceased, investigators are actively working to identify any other individuals who may have collaborated in the illicit trade. Furthermore, Grove added that the team has intelligence suggesting there may be additional items of similar provenance located outside the current recovery area.
The repatriation underscores the FBI’s commitment to combating the illegal trade of cultural heritage. The recovered pieces are significant historical assets, providing tangible links to several major eras of Egyptian civilization.
