Fires in Kosovo: Police warn of harsh measures against arsonists

Wildfires in the forests and fields of Kosovo present a persistent and serious environmental and safety concern during the summer months. These recurring incidents cause substantial damage to both natural habitats and private property, while also posing a direct threat to the lives of citizens. With the increasing risks associated with high temperatures and drought conditions, the Kosovo Police have issued urgent warnings to the public.

Authorities are calling on all citizens to exercise extreme caution and refrain from any activity that could potentially ignite a fire. Furthermore, the public is instructed to immediately report any suspected instances of arson to the police. The police have highlighted that the damage inflicted by uncontrolled fires extends significantly to forest ecosystems and agricultural land.

They have also warned that individuals found responsible for starting fires, regardless of whether the act is malicious or due to negligence, will face appropriate legal action. Adding an ecological perspective, biologist Ferdije Zhushi Etemi stated that initiating fires provides no benefit to the land. Instead, such actions degrade the ecosystem and diminish its natural fertility.

The consistent threat of these fires underscores the need for heightened public awareness and adherence to safety protocols across Kosovo.
