Fires in western Athens spread further

Fires in western Athens have spread further, presenting significant challenges to emergency response efforts. Approximately 500 firefighters and volunteers are currently engaged in efforts to contain the blaze. Despite the substantial manpower deployed, strong winds are severely complicating and nearly impeding efforts to extinguish the multiple hotspots.

Firefighters and volunteers are currently addressing over 70 distinct fire hotspots across Greece. However, the persistent strong winds continue to feed the flames, which significantly complicates the efforts of the firefighters to gain control and bring the incidents under suppression. The largest fire incident is located approximately 60 kilometers west of Athens, from which substantial plumes of smoke are visible.

To bolster the response, approximately 500 Fire Service personnel are on site, with support also arriving from firefighters originating in Romania. The combination of widespread hotspots and adverse weather conditions is making fire suppression efforts exceptionally difficult for the dedicated firefighters on the ground.
