First case of Zika virus registered in Macedonia; patient was infected while on vacation in the Maldives

The Institute of Public Health has confirmed the detection of the first documented case of Zika virus infection in North Macedonia. The infection was traced back to a resident who contracted the virus after being bitten by a mosquito while visiting the Maldives. According to the Institute, the affected individual was in the Maldives between May 20th and May 28th and reported experiencing a mosquito bite during that time frame.

Upon returning to North Macedonia, the patient sought examination at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases. The Department of Virology at the Institute of Public Health subsequently confirmed the positive test result for the Zika virus on May 17th. Following the confirmation, public health officials initiated immediate protocols.

Epidemiologists contacted the patient to provide necessary guidance and implemented comprehensive preventive measures. Furthermore, extensive epidemiological surveys were conducted to monitor potential exposure risks. The official reporting of the case was completed, and sanitation teams proceeded to disinfect the area surrounding the patient’s residence to mitigate any potential spread.

These coordinated public health actions underscore the ongoing surveillance efforts to manage emerging infectious diseases within the country.
