Putin Appoints New Commander for Russian Space Forces
Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the replacement of the commander of the Russian Space Forces. Colonel-General Alexander Chaiko has been appointed to lead the forces, which encompass air and anti-missile defense capabilities. The appointment follows the departure of General Viktor Afzalov, who held the position since 2023.
The change was reported by RBK, citing a well-informed source, and subsequently confirmed by Telegrafi. Chaiko, 54, is a graduate of the Suvorov Military School in Moscow and has held significant command roles within the Russian military. He previously commanded Russian forces in Syria during the late 2010s and has served as the head of the Eastern Military District since 2021, earning the title of Hero of Russia according to the European Union.
The appointment comes amidst ongoing military operations. Simultaneously, a significant fire involving at least four fuel tanks has been reported in Tuaps. It is important to note that Chaiko’s background has been subject to scrutiny, with the European Union linking him to events in Bucha, where he previously led a group accused of civilian casualties near Kyiv.
This appointment reflects ongoing shifts within the Russian military leadership under President Putin.
