Former Israeli Prime Minister Barak: Netanyahu should be removed with sticks and stones

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak issued strong warnings regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that if Netanyahu attempts to undermine the forthcoming general election, the response will be forceful. Speaking in an interview with the Israeli public service KAN, Barak expressed concern that Netanyahu might sabotage the electoral process. Barak specifically warned that Netanyahu could provoke conflict by launching military operations in Lebanon, an escalation that could trigger retaliation from Hezbollah and Iran.

The former Israeli leader alleged that Netanyahu desires an “endless war” to delay his ongoing legal proceedings. Furthermore, Barak criticized the prime minister for allegedly obstructing hostage-swap agreements with Hamas and impeding progress on Lebanon negotiations. In a broader critique, Barak also sharply criticized a draft agreement involving the US and Iran, labeling it “very bad” and suggesting that Israel is paying a price due to what he termed Netanyahu’s “arrogance and lack of vision.”

The context of these remarks involves Netanyahu, who has led the current Israeli government since late 2022.

His coalition is widely considered the most right-wing in Israeli history. Meanwhile, the current Knesset composition is set to expire in October 26, with elections anticipated in September or October. Adding to the political pressure, the current prime minister faces corruption charges in Israel and has been subject to warrants from the International Criminal Court regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza.
