Former LSDM officials promote a new movement, criticizing Venko Filipçe’s leadership

A gathering involving approximately twenty former and one current official of the Social Democratic Party of Albania (LSDM) convened on Wednesday to promote a new political movement. The group stated its objective is to establish an alternative voice within the social democratic spectrum, arguing that the core principles of the movement are not being adequately represented by the LSDM under the current leadership of Venko Filipçe. Several prominent former members of the LSDM attended the meeting, lending support to the initiative.

These included former deputy chairman Igor Ivanovski, who spearheaded the gathering, alongside former secretary-general Nikola Qurkčiev, Emilijan Stanković, and former deputy chairmen Andrej Petrov and Gordan Georgiev. The assembly also included current party figures, notably deputy Slavjanka Petrovska, who previously contested the LSDM chairmanship against Venko Filipçe, and Monika Zajkova, chairwoman of the Liberal-Democratic Party and a deputy. The formation of this new group signals a potential internal divergence within the Albanian social democratic political landscape.

By assembling these figures, the movement aims to reaffirm what its proponents view as the authentic articulation of social democratic ideology, separate from the current organizational direction of the LSDM. The meeting solidified a visible faction advocating for a distinct platform within the party’s historical framework.
