Five individuals swimming near each other in the Drin River in Gjorica, Bulqizë, on Tuesday afternoon were involved in an incident that has led to suspicions of a child’s drowning. According to sources near the Bulqizë Police, the incident occurred when the water level in the Drin River increased following the opening of the gates at the hydroelectric plant in Dibër e Madhe. This sudden change in water flow is believed to have swept the group away.
Family members alerted the police regarding the situation around 9:00 PM. Police services promptly responded and spent approximately four hours at the scene, during which they successfully rescued four people. Searches are currently ongoing to locate a child, estimated to be around seven years old, who is suspected to have been carried away by the river’s current.
The police continue their efforts in the area surrounding the Drin River.
