Germany remains steadfast: Border controls remain in place.

Germany Upholds Border Controls Amidst Continued Irregular Migration Attempts

Berlin – Germany will continue to maintain border controls at its land borders despite a decrease in the number of reported irregular crossings, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. The announcement, reported by German media and HINA, follows ongoing concerns regarding attempts to cross the country’s borders illegally. Speaking to public broadcaster ARD, Minister Dobrindt (CSU) stated that the current situation necessitates the continuation of border controls.

“We are still registering attempts at irregular border crossings,” he explained. He emphasized the long-term objective of establishing a functional EU-wide migration system, which he believes will ultimately render these controls obsolete. While acknowledging the desire for a coordinated European solution, Dobrindt indicated that the immediate priority remains the maintenance of border controls.

He offered no specific timeframe for their potential removal, stating simply, “Until that happens, we will maintain this measure in the short term.”

The decision reflects Germany’s continued commitment to managing migration flows and underscores the challenges in achieving a unified approach to border security across the European Union. The focus remains on the eventual implementation of a comprehensive migration system.
