Honduras will buy Ukrainian drones to combat drug trafficking

Honduras intends to acquire drones from Ukraine as a measure to bolster border security and combat illicit activities, according to President Nasry Asfura on Monday. The announcement highlights the nation’s ongoing struggle against organized crime, gang violence, and sophisticated drug trafficking networks, which continue to present substantial security challenges to the country. The potential procurement follows a meeting last week in Kyiv between President Asfura and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

During their discussions, Zelensky offered cooperation in military technology, specifically mentioning drone systems. This cooperation aligns with Ukraine’s efforts to expand international partnerships beyond Europe, demonstrating capabilities developed during its conflict with Russia. President Asfura made the statement to AFP in Panama City while attending the General Assembly of the Organization of American States.

The integration of advanced surveillance technology is positioned as a key component of Honduras’s strategy to reinforce its sovereignty and manage the complex threat posed by transnational criminal organizations. The acquisition of Ukrainian drone technology signals a diplomatic effort by Honduras to enhance its capacity to interdict illegal drug shipments and secure its extensive borders against organized trafficking operations.
