Hovenier: Kosovo risks losing Washington’s trust if it does not act

Former U.S. Ambassador to Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier, stated that the advancement of key priorities for Kosovo is contingent upon the establishment of stable domestic institutions. Speaking in an interview with Radio Free Europe, Hovenier cautioned that ongoing political instability is negatively impacting Kosovo’s standing among major international partners, including the United States and the European Union.

Hovenier specifically noted that the suspension of the Strategic Dialogue with Washington represents a tangible consequence of the current political climate. According to the former ambassador, for Pristina to successfully restore and improve its relationship with the administration of President Donald Trump, immediate and decisive action is necessary. He highlighted that critical areas requiring prompt attention include the management of energy resources and the complex issues concerning the Serb community.

Hovenier emphasized the limited nature of international focus, advising that the attention of Washington is not indefinite. He urged Kosovar leadership to take advantage of available opportunities rather than allowing time to pass without tangible progress. The commentary underscores that institutional stability is viewed by external partners, including those in Washington, as a prerequisite for sustained diplomatic support and regional development for Kosovo.
