South Korea recently conducted military exercises designed to test its defensive capabilities against large-scale, coordinated drone attacks. These drills, held along the South Korean west coast, simulated a “swarm” scenario involving 50 drones, mimicking modern warfare where numerous unmanned devices strike simultaneously from multiple vectors. Reports indicate that the South Korean defense systems successfully neutralized the majority of the simulated targets.
Specifically, eight Vulcan anti-aircraft guns were utilized, shooting down 44 drones through concentrated fire. The remaining six were eliminated using a combination of a portable laser system and light weaponry. This exercise underscores a growing global concern within militaries regarding the escalating use of drones in conflict.
Recent conflicts have demonstrated that relatively inexpensive drone technology can inflict substantial damage on military assets, critical infrastructure, and established defensive positions. Given the persistent threat posed by North Korea and its advancement in unmanned military technology, South Korea is actively investing in new systems for drone detection and countermeasures.
