IOM: Birth rate is low in Macedonia, there is a demographic crisis

The World Migration Report 2026, published by the IOM, indicates that Europe is facing a profound structural shift, placing the region at the center of a deepening demographic crisis over the coming decades. Among the nations most severely impacted is Macedonia. The country faces significant challenges as its birth rate falls below the replacement level, a trend exacerbated by the emigration of its prime, reproductive-age population.

This outflow of young workers diminishes the nation’s long-term demographic potential. Analysis of data spanning from 2005 to 2024 reveals a stark divergence across the continent. While certain economies, such as Luxembourg, Malta, and Ireland, have managed to record population growth, a considerable number of countries, particularly those located in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, have experienced notable population contractions.

For several states, including Macedonia, these declining trends suggest substantial structural pressure on future labor markets and social services. The persistent combination of low fertility rates and outward migration patterns is creating complex demographic headwinds across the region. These findings underscore the urgent need for regional planning to address population stability and sustain economic viability in the face of these sustained demographic shifts.
