Security expert Avni Islami has advised that Kosovo should reorient its focus from awaiting political shifts in Serbia toward reinforcing its domestic security institutions and economy. In a post on Facebook, Islami argued that Serbia remains under the influence of a political approach that, in his assessment, conflicts with Kosovo’s best interests. He noted the scarcity of dissenting voices regarding the political legacy of Slobodan Milošević.
Islami stated that when Kosovo faces scrutiny, the opposition and the established powers in Belgrade often act in unison, characterizing the situation as a competitive display of patriotism. Consequently, he advised that Kosovo should not make the democratization of Serbia a prerequisite for recognition. Instead, the nation should develop a strategy centered on self-empowerment.
According to Islami, the focus must shift internally. Strengthening Kosovo’s own security apparatus and economic foundations should take precedence over external political developments. This self-reliance, he suggested, is crucial for advancing Kosovo’s long-term stability and sovereignty, rather than remaining dependent on the political climate within Serbia.
