Tourism visiting the Durrës beach has seen a noticeable reduction in numbers from Kosovo this season. Several factors are cited for this trend, including escalating costs, the strengthening of the local currency relative to the euro, and increased accessibility to other international travel destinations. Along “Pavarësia” street, which fronts nearly four kilometers of the Durrës beach, the regular patronage previously provided by Kosovar Albanians is less evident.
The street, named in commemoration of Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence, is currently characterized by numerous hotels and commercial establishments lining the coast facing the Adriatic Sea. Historically, the beach attracted a steady stream of visitors. According to Cen Hysniu, a local business owner, the area once saw tourism driven by local families, particularly those connected to the events of 1999, a period when visits were sometimes referred to as patriotic tourism.
Previously, tourists originating from Kosovo constituted a consistent segment of the visitors to the Durrës beach. The current economic climate and shifting travel patterns appear to have altered these established visitor demographics. The shift reflects broader economic pressures and changing consumer preferences among the Kosovar population regarding holiday destinations.
