Kosovo’s Minister of Interior, Xhelal Sveçla, has urged the international community to take action against Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić until he addresses the remarks made by Minister Paunović. Sveçla’s call follows Paunović’s statements, where she reportedly suggested that ethnic cleansing in Kosovo would occur if she were in the position held by another official. Speaking in an interview with A2CNN, Sveçla characterized the European Union’s current position as insufficient.
He asserted that Vučić must not only dismiss Paunović but also ensure she faces criminal prosecution. “As far as the international community is concerned, I still think it is a weak reaction; there should be an isolation of the Serbian government until measures are taken against its members regarding their language and behavior in relation to the Albanian population and in relation to European standards,” Sveçla stated. The minister emphasized the need for accountability regarding statements made by Serbian officials concerning the Albanian population and adherence to European norms.
Sveçla’s remarks underscore a demand for concrete measures from Serbia, arguing that mere diplomatic statements are inadequate. The focus remains on holding officials accountable for rhetoric deemed inflammatory or contrary to international standards within Kosovo.
