Kosovo Prime Minister Kurti Expresses Disappointment Over EU Membership Application Silence

PRISHTINA – Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti addressed the ongoing situation surrounding the country’s application for European Union membership, stating that the Council has not yet responded despite the submission of the application in mid-December 2022. Kurti emphasized that pursuing EU membership remains a strategic priority for both the government and the Kosovan people. Speaking on April 15th, Kurti highlighted the significant passage of time – 40 months – since the application was initially submitted without a response from the Council.

He underscored Kosovo’s position as the most advanced democracy within the region, noting its robust economic growth and alignment with the EU’s values and foreign policy objectives. “Membership in the European Union is a strategic choice that our society has made and the government has prioritized,” Kurti stated. He indicated the government is seeking to accelerate the process and improve coordination within the EU framework.

The Prime Minister reiterated Kosovo’s commitment to upholding democratic standards and contributing to the stability of the Western Balkans, highlighting the nation’s dedication to fulfilling the requirements for EU membership. The situation remains a key focus for the government of Kosovo, with Kurti continuing to advocate for a positive response from the European Council.
